Some people maybe destined to roam the world, no true home in sight. Other are deeply rooted in the places they settle. I'm not entirely sure where I fall yet. I would hope it'd be somewhere in between. A life close to home, yet one that allows me to travel and see the world. In Boston, I have done my best to create a life away from home, but somethings can't be replaced. How do I miss home, with all its sunshine, the warmth of people, and above all else my family and friends.

Having just dropped off a visiting friend from California at the bus station, I was reminded how lonely things are here. That even despite my best attempts to make Boston my home, it is only a stop in the greater schemes of things. I don't know where life will take me next.... maybe I'll end up staying in Boston, maybe I'll get to move back home or maybe end up in another part of the world! But as I walked from Copley Square to the medical campus in South End, I was at peace with where I am in life. Picking up a hot choclate from a popular bakery/cafe in the area, Flour, I sat on a bench facing the school and the sunrise, soaking up the early warmth of the sun, and thinking to myself how lucky I was. Depsite becoming aware of feelings of isolation, I was reminded we are born alone and die alone. I was reminded of the importance of creating strong bonds with hte places and people you come across. I was reminded how important it is to smile even to stangers, something New Englanders have lost in the midst of the haste of life (I blame the cold!). Soaking up the sunshine, sipping hot chocolate in the crisp morning air, I realized despite feelings of isolation from familiarity, I have purpose, driven by the memories and expereinces that define who I am and the aspirations of who I want to be. Look for me another morning outside of school, drinking hot chocolate and living in the moment.
<img width='1' height='1' A lesson from the past parallels many of the stories we see today.

Mary Dyer preached that God was not exclusive to the clergy and offered to teach men and women how to read and understand the bible. Upon entering Puritan Boston for the third time to contest a religious ban, the middle-aged mother of 6 was arrested, paraded and hanged in 1660 before a public audience at the Boston Commons for the sole crime of being a Quaker. However she did not die in vain, but rather became a matyr and is remebered today for her strength and fortitude in the face of ignorance and injustice. Her story inspired the adoption of a new standard of religious tolerance in Massachusetts, which was latter adopted into the US Constitution.

Denying a people the right to practice their religion freely, whether it is to build a place of worship or in the proper circumstances pray at work is to betray the memory of people like Mary Dyer and so many others who have fought to build a nation of tolerance and equality, which is part of the America, we all hold dear. Let us pray we do not give way to ignorance and fear-mongering.

Dyer's last words before she was hanged were "Nay, I came to keep bloodguiltiness from you, desireing you to repeal the unrighteous and unjust law made against the innocent servants of the Lord. Nay, man, I am not now to repent." Let us not forget.

the New Scene

Watch this video on YouTube

the New Imperative

"I've never known a man worth his salt who in the long run, deep down in his heart, didn't appreciate the grind, the discipline. There is something good in men that really yearns for discipline."

Vince Lombardi, Green Bay Packers Football Coach; 1913-'70

As I spend hours upon hours toiling over MCAT material and honing verbal skills, I can't help but feel how important it is to live a life of discipline; discipline of mind, body and spirit. This realization, a conclusion in the making for a sometime now, actualized in this post, is something I have yearned for a longtime, and tasted time and time again. It is by no measure an easy feat, but one that requires conviction and perseverance.

As a devout Muslim, it is not only a desire but an imperative. A Muslims day starts with the remembrance of God, in the morning prayer (Fajr), which is to be preformed before sunrise. This mandatory prayer requires implementation of proper sleep habits. While many fall back to sleep after prayers (myself included so many times before), the few that stay awake enjoy a special period of the day. The twilight hours are a unique and perfect opportunity for reflection and personal growth. The air is cooler, fresher, quieter and more serene. Actions in the early morning set the pace for the rest of the day, whether its getting an early start at work, academia, a morning run, spiritual development, whatever it is, the rest of the day just seems more fruitful. To adhere to this type of living is an achievement in itself and bound to lead to a much more fulfilling life.

Inspired by Muhammad

"I believe in coexistence, so did Muhammad" and "I am inspired!!"
http://www.inspiredbymuhammad.com/

Got this from a CAIR tweet. The book offers an insiders look into the world of doctors without borders, a organization I admire strongly and may one day be a part of. I wanted to share a potion of the back cover of the book.

"Doctors Without Borders sends more than 3,000 volunteers annually to conflict zones, refugee camps and anywhere else in the world where medical care is desperately needed.

Volunteers often work in poor and dangerous places. Some are traumatized, kidnapped, even murdered. many watch their idealism become disillusionment, their friends become strangers. Others feed on the adventure, fall in love, or find the family they never had."

Yikes! This is definitely not an undertaking for the faint of heart. And its amazing to see how different microscopic organisms and molecules relate to each other. However at times that may become difficult when your dealing with units like nanometers. I mean how in the world do you relate to a nanometer! (yes I know its 10^-9 meters), but most of us lack any intuitive sense of what it is.

So ever wonder how the size of an atom compares to say a hemoglobin, or even a chromosome to a blood cell? Egg to a sperm? Well wonder no more.

The Genetic Science Learning Center at the University of Utah put together this amazing model on the relative size and scales of the microscopic world. Cell Size and Scale It's still strange to most westerners and even easterners, but no uncommon. The same mispronunciations, questions, awkward award ceremonies..... all these things I had come to know with my own unique name was no longer exclusive to me; I now shared those experiences with a number of other individuals, one of whom just happened to take my place as I left UCLA. Contemplating my own now shattered uniqueness, I was led to realize a name is only outward label. Who you are and what defines you as a unique individual, is not defined by a name, but it's who you are inside, how you carry yourself, your past experiences, dreams and aspirations and beliefs. These are the things that really define you as an individual and contribute to your unique place in history.

3 Points: McGrady's journey to Darfur

In 2007, Houston Rockets Shooting Guard, Tracy McGrady traveled to Darfur with an organization called Enough Project. William Laga, characterized as a tall, slender, and shabbily dressed homeless man, could often be found at the corner somewhere by CPK, strolling about and often mumbling to himself. The schizophrenic man, who has lived on the streets for more then three decades, finds peace for his shattered mind on a blank canvas with an array of colors. He makes a weekly trek of 16mi to Pierce College to sit in on art classes and take a weekly shower at their gym. However, his story remained unknown to the countless bystanders about him.

On Christmas Eve of last year, art patron, Marcelle Danan, stumbled across him as he sought refugee from the rain. Seeing his innate talent she brought him to her house, and for the next few months supplied him with art supplies to fuel his passion. With the help of Danan, Laga has begun to sell his paintings and is becoming a internationally recognized painter. He is currently working in Paris, France. The story originally aired on KCAL 9.

A Touching Story: Amazing Painter, Homeless Man

Homeless Painters First Art Show

Texting while Driving

Many states have passed laws against talking on a cell phone while driving, but many are yet to enact a law against texting while driving. Only 10 states and the District of Columbia have bans on texting while driving, and ten more are set to join this coming January. California enacted the law earlier this year, prohibiting any texting by any age driver. Other states have criteria of age and place in regards to texting.

Nonetheless, texting while driving seems like a absurd thing to do, however it happens often enough (I've done quick texts in standstill traffic). But many opponents argue how is it any different from digging something out of the dashboard or even the all to famous girl doing her makeup behind the wheel, all having the same potential of being as disastrous as texting. However, statistically speaking according to the National Highway Traffic Saftey Administration, in 2002, 955 deaths could be attributed to drivers on their cell phones and a study at Virginia Tech reveals there is a 23x greater chance of getting into an accident while driving compared to a driver focused on the road.

There is also the issue of enforcement. How can officers enforce a law that involves a discrete action. The use of cell phones are hardly limited to texting. And most often the case is the driver doesnt text in an officers face while driving. It is a subtle act, that often times is never intended. However, I think it boils down to a moral obligation. Texting while driving is not only putting yourself in danger, its potentailly putting the people around you at risk, and endangering countelss of innocent lives.

Whatever the outcome of future debates, texting while driving is no lesser of an evil than driving under the influence. The UK released a PSA to deter teens from texting. Note it is a reenactment, but nonetheless a horrifically staged depiction, especially when considering the human toll in real situations.

A White House Iftar- Obama Style

Today, September 1st, President Obama hosted an iftar dinner at the White House, in recognition of the holy month of Ramadan. Each year millions of Muslims mark this holy month with increased spirituality and fasting, in keeping with the traditions of Prophets. Obama's recognition and active participation is a far more welcoming approach than his predecessors. But it leads me to wonder, is there any genuity in his actions or is it all just part of the PR campaign. I hope its just a bit a both. Everywhere you look, from the highest frozen peaks to the crushing ocean abysses, from the not so barren desserts, teeming with life to the lush tropical forests, even gazing into the far stretches of deep space, there are abundant signs of a higher order of intellectual proprietorship, far surpassing our own crude understanding. This is one my favorite verses, because it is a constant reminder of the greatness within life and all that surrounds it. We truly do live among signs..... It's just a matter of opening your eyes and ears around you.

MCAT

Why We Need Health Care Reform

By <person idsrc="nyt-per" value="arts,automobiles,books,business,college,dining,education,fashion,garden,giving,health,jobs,magazine,movies,multimedia,nyregion,obituaries,realestate,science,sports,style,technology,theater,travel,us,washington,weekinreview,world:::more articles about barack obama:::http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/o/barack_obama/index.html"><alt-code idsrc="nyt-per" value="obama, barack">Barack Obama</alt-code></person><nyt_byline version="1.0" type=" "> </nyt_byline>
Published: August 15, 2009 NY Times

OUR nation is now engaged in a great debate about the future of health care in America. And over the past few weeks, much of the media attention has been focused on the loudest voices. What we haven’t heard are the voices of the millions upon millions of Americans who quietly struggle every day with a system that often works better for the health-insurance companies than it does for them.

These are people like Lori Hitchcock, whom I met in New Hampshire last week. Lori is currently self-employed and trying to start a business, but because she has hepatitis C, she cannot find an insurance company that will cover her. Another woman testified that an insurance company would not cover illnesses related to her internal organs because of an accident she had when she was 5 years old. A man lost his health coverage in the middle of chemotherapy because the insurance company discovered that he had gallstones, which he hadn’t known about when he applied for his policy. Because his treatment was delayed, he died.

I hear more and more stories like these every single day, and it is why we are acting so urgently to pass health-insurance reform this year. I don’t have to explain to the nearly 46 million Americans who don’t have health insurance how important this is. But it’s just as important for Americans who do have health insurance.

There are four main ways the reform we’re proposing will provide more stability and security to every American.

First, if you don’t have health insurance, you will have a choice of high-quality, affordable coverage for yourself and your family — coverage that will stay with you whether you move, change your job or lose your job.

Second, reform will finally bring skyrocketing health care costs under control, which will mean real savings for families, businesses and our government. We’ll cut hundreds of billions of dollars in waste and inefficiency in federal health programs like Medicare and Medicaid and in unwarranted subsidies to insurance companies that do nothing to improve care and everything to improve their profits.

Third, by making Medicare more efficient, we’ll be able to ensure that more tax dollars go directly to caring for seniors instead of enriching insurance companies. This will not only help provide today’s seniors with the benefits they’ve been promised; it will also ensure the long-term health of Medicare for tomorrow’s seniors. And our reforms will also reduce the amount our seniors pay for their prescription drugs.

Lastly, reform will provide every American with some basic consumer protections that will finally hold insurance companies accountable. A 2007 national survey actually shows that insurance companies discriminated against more than 12 million Americans in the previous three years because they had a pre-existing illness or condition. The companies either refused to cover the person, refused to cover a specific illness or condition or charged a higher premium.

We will put an end to these practices. Our reform will prohibit insurance companies from denying coverage because of your medical history. Nor will they be allowed to drop your coverage if you get sick. They will not be able to water down your coverage when you need it most. They will no longer be able to place some arbitrary cap on the amount of coverage you can receive in a given year or in a lifetime. And we will place a limit on how much you can be charged for out-of-pocket expenses. No one in America should go broke because they get sick.

Most important, we will require insurance companies to cover routine checkups, preventive care and screening tests like mammograms and colonoscopies. There’s no reason that we shouldn’t be catching diseases like breast cancer and prostate cancer on the front end. It makes sense, it saves lives and it can also save money.

This is what reform is about. If you don’t have health insurance, you will finally have quality, affordable options once we pass reform. If you have health insurance, we will make sure that no insurance company or government bureaucrat gets between you and the care you need. If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan. You will not be waiting in any lines. This is not about putting the government in charge of your health insurance. I don’t believe anyone should be in charge of your health care decisions but you and your doctor — not government bureaucrats, not insurance companies.
The long and vigorous debate about health care that’s been taking place over the past few months is a good thing. It’s what America’s all about.
But let’s make sure that we talk with one another, and not over one another. We are bound to disagree, but let’s disagree over issues that are real, and not wild misrepresentations that bear no resemblance to anything that anyone has actually proposed. This is a complicated and critical issue, and it deserves a serious debate.

Despite what we’ve seen on television, I believe that serious debate is taking place at kitchen tables all across America. In the past few years, I’ve received countless letters and questions about health care. Some people are in favor of reform, and others have concerns. But almost everyone understands that something must be done. Almost everyone knows that we must start holding insurance companies accountable and give Americans a greater sense of stability and security when it comes to their health care.

I am confident that when all is said and done, we can forge the consensus we need to achieve this goal. We are already closer to achieving health-insurance reform than we have ever been. We have the American Nurses Association and the American Medical Association on board, because our nation’s nurses and doctors know firsthand how badly we need reform. We have broad agreement in Congress on about 80 percent of what we’re trying to do. And we have an agreement from the drug companies to make prescription drugs more affordable for seniors. The AARP supports this policy, and agrees with us that reform must happen this year.

In the coming weeks, the cynics and the naysayers will continue to exploit fear and concerns for political gain. But for all the scare tactics out there, what’s truly scary — truly risky — is the prospect of doing nothing. If we maintain the status quo, we will continue to see 14,000 Americans lose their health insurance every day. Premiums will continue to skyrocket. Our deficit will continue to grow. And insurance companies will continue to profit by discriminating against sick people.

That is not a future I want for my children, or for yours. And that is not a future I want for the United States of America.
In the end, this isn’t about politics. This is about people’s lives and livelihoods. This is about people’s businesses. This is about America’s future, and whether we will be able to look back years from now and say that this was the moment when we made the changes we needed, and gave our children a better life. I believe we can, and I believe we will.

Ikea Jerker Desk

I really want to sell my desk. The wind will carry them to India or somewhere." Of the 192 left at sea, a group of them including Noor Muhammad, were found by an Indonesian Fisherman and were brought to Indonesia for treatment. They now face possible deportation back to Myanmar but they plead to rather be killed then sent back.

In Thailand, another 66 Rohingya face criminal charges for illegally entering Thailand. The Thai government contends that the migrants don't qualify as refugee status because they fled for economic reasons. However according to the Associated Press, Human right agencies and the US government have long asserted that the Rohingya People face "gross discrimination and are denied citizenship in their homeland of Myanmar because they are Muslims."

Kitty McKinsey, a U.N. IDPs uprooted by war, famine and natural disasters; a nearly incomprehensible number, 42 million individuals with individual yet eerily analogous life stories, hopes and shattered dreams, displaced and forced to live without a home, without family, a stranger in foreign lands away from all that they once knew. Fleeing with nothing but hope in the humanity of others and their faith in a higher power. Doctors without Borders or also known as Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) are at the fore front of providing aid to these millions, through medical care, food and shelter and information to the needy and helpless. Doctors Without Borders is an “international independent medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflicts, epidemics, malnutrition, natural disasters and exclusion from health care in more than 60 countries” across the world. On any one day 27,000 individuals ranging from doctors, nurses, logistics experts, administrators, epidemiologists, laboratory techs, mental health professionals and others can be found upholding the humanitarian principles of medical ethics and impartiality, by providing quality healthcare to people regardless of race, religion, or political affiliation.

October 31st to November 1st 2009, Doctors Without Borders touring exhibit, “A refugee camp in the heart of the city” came to Santa Monica, next to the Pier. The exhibit featured a surreal tour of a makeshift refugee camp. It highlighted various aspects of a refugee camp including different forms of shelters, food stores, medical tents, and other stations commonly found and needed in these camps. The tour was given by former and current MFS volunteers, who intertwined their own real experiences working abroad with the gripping visuals portrayed to the audience on the walkthrough. The tour featured several stations where participants learned of various aspects of life as a refugee. Each station was introduced in the form of a question for in the point of view of the refugee, “Where will I live? Where will I find Water? Where will I go to the bathroom? What if I get sick?” and “How long will I be here?” And at each station the tour guide addressed the various problems, and how refugees cope with them, and MSF’s involvement. The exhibit a huge success also included lectures at local campuses. The exhibit from here moves to Northern California.

MSF’s work abroad and in a more generalized sense the safeguarding of the world’s poor and suffering, as cliché as it sounds, holds a special place in my heart. In the future I hope to see myself working for an organization like Doctors without Borders and going abroad and volunteering my time and skills as a medical professional. I find myself especially drawn to this cause because the majority of refugees share the same beliefs and ideals as me, and were persecuted on that basis. The majority of refugees come from Muslim backgrounds, from the deserts of Somalia to the peaks of Albania. Refugees from Palestine number 4.6 million, Afghanistan 3.1 million, and Iraq’s 2.3 million.

“Humanitarian action is based on the conviction that ordinary people caught in conflict and crisis, whoever and whoever they be, deserve to be spared from the excesses of violence and to receive lifesaving assistance that is impartial, neutral and free from political or religious agendas.” This statement encompasses my beliefs and my desire to be the keeper of my brothers and sisters abroad, to be among the guardians of humanity, the abettor to those who have lost everything. It will be a long difficult journey, but I am determined to use medicine as an instrument abroad to bring peace to lands torn apart by discrimination and animosity.

Dr. Hassan Hathout dies at 84; Islamic leader fostered interfaith relations

Dr. Hassan Hathout, a physician, medical ethicist and leader of the Southern California Islamic community who was at the forefront of efforts to demystify American Muslims and build interfaith bonds, has died. He was 84.

Hathout died of natural causes Saturday at his Pasadena home, said a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles-based Muslim Public Affairs Council, of which he was a prominent member.

He was also a leader of the Islamic Center of Southern California, where he coordinated outreach efforts for two decades. A well-regarded scholar, he wrote several books, including "Reading the Muslim Mind."

"He was one of our giants in the history of Islam in America," who urged Muslims to be "organically integrated in American society and not act as visitors" in it, Salam al Marayati, executive director of the Muslim Public Affairs Council, said Sunday.

In 1998 Hathout delivered a sermon at the first White House celebration of Eid al-Fitr, the day marking the end of the Muslim holy month Ramadan. Along with Rabbi Leonard Beerman of Bel-Air's Leo Baeck Temple and the Rev. George Regas of All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena, Hathout also helped organize the Interfaith Center to Reverse the Arms Race, one of the first major inter-religious efforts in Los Angeles.

"As a physician he was so committed to life, he wanted to stand against anything that was going to obliterate life. He did that as a deeply religious person," Regas said Sunday.

Hathout was born in Cairo on Dec. 23, 1924. The son of a schoolteacher, he was educated at the University of Edinburgh where he earned degrees from the Royal College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He also had a doctorate of philosophy in reproductive genetics.

He taught obstetrics and gynecology in Kuwait, where he lived for 26 years before immigrating to the United States in the late 1980s.

He quickly became involved in interfaith work in Los Angeles. With Beerman and Regas, he organized weekly prayer services for Muslims, Christians and Jews during the Persian Gulf War in 1991. The first service at All Saints in Pasadena drew more than 1,500 worshipers.

"We've lived together for centuries with mutual reserve and hatred," he told the Daily News in 1991. "One of the positive things of the whole gulf crisis is that the three communities came together and discovered each other's faith and scriptures are so similar."

After 9/11, Hathout stepped up his efforts at bridge-building and called on Muslims to tone down anti-American rhetoric. He also spoke at Open Mosque Day, a program launched in 2002 in which more than two dozen mosques in Southern California invited non-Muslims to join in Islamic prayers, food and literature.

At one such event a few years ago, he told visitors that instead of classifying humanity by religion, he sought to view people in more basic terms: "those with a loving heart and those with a hating heart."

"He had a wonderful heart," said Dr. Omar Alfi, a physician and former chairman of the Islamic Center of Southern California, who knew Hathout for 60 years. I was nervous and anxious on our way there. I wasn't sure what to expect. I had heard much about this area of downtown. Never have I seen so much loss and agony in one place. Going up and down the street, there were countless men and women walking about aimlessly, sleeping on the sidwalk or lounging. Looking into the faces of the people I saw the pain and loss as well as the dilapitated compliant conditions around them.

Homelessness is a complicated issue. Many of these homeless people could just be down on their luck, mentally ill, veterans to a country that has forsaken them, some could be criminals and fugitives, others may not even be homeless! But nonetheless the state of these people and the condition in which they continue to persist and endure through should not and cannnot be ignored. It is a matter of humanity. To help the poor and defend the weak. Yet despite these grounded idealouges I found myself skwirmming at the sight. I am ashamed to find in myself the feelings of fear, a fear of this strange new world so distant from my conception of home, a fear of saftey, a fear of losing some insignificant material possession. It was a surreal experience. I had always heard of people going to places like this and saying they couldn't believe they were still in America, however you can never truely know what that means unless you go for youself and see it with your own eyes! It hits home taking over your greatest securities of saftey and the idea of the perfect American Dream.

We drove through the street once, surveying a good place to drop the food off. The street itself was only the beginning, all around the block, there were people minding their own business, just a block away from the polic station. After the first drive through we came around again and stopped at a Volunteer Center. There we dropped the 22 sandwich bags containing a turkey sandwich, chips, apple and cookies in a courtyard of more than 50 people. As soon as we dropped it, people swarmmed around the food, taking a bag and devearouing it.

Although we surely did not contribute to ending poverty in America, this experience has brought to surface feelings of my own ungratefullness and weakness. I pray to Allah(swt) to strengthen me as a person, to help me fear him alone and I seek his forgiveness and mercy, I ask Allah(swt) to alleviate the pains of poverty and to give guidance to those who have gone astray. I thank Allah(swt) for his bountiless blessings. As it says in the Qu'ran,

"He has completed His blessings upon you, in open and hidden ways" [31:20]

We can truley never be able to express ourselves in way that would do justice for the innumerable blessings we are each given. But we can say Alhumdullialah and be grateful when we have the opportunity to do so, especially for the greatest blessing of all, faith, something that many of the people of Skid Row have lost. I will definately be going again, if you'd like to join let me know.

Manzanar, Living in a Remebered Present

February 19th 1942, Executive Order 9066, signed by President Franklin Roosevelt, began the forced relocation of thousands of West Coast Japanese Americans to ten concentration camps spread out across the the western continental states. Fueled by war time hysteria and fear following the cowardly attack on Pearl Harbor by the Empire of Japan, Americans of Japanese ancestry were subjected to humiliating treatment and racist attitudes that brought into question their loyalty to America. As early as following the decimation of the American Pacific naval fleet, the FBI moved swiftly to solve the "Japanese Problem" by seizing and arresting "enemy" aliens. The newly created War Relocation Authority (WRA) was charged to create the camps that would eventually become the home of around 120,000 Japanese Americans, 2/3 of which were American born citizens. Of these camps, Manzanar once the prison to hundreds of families, has now been transformed into a site of remembrance, and a endearing reminder of American complancy in the face of injustice.

Located in the desolate and arid Ownes Valley, Manzanar was an enclosed one square-mile area of military style barracks, mess halls, and open fields, that housed over 10,000 people, under the survielence of eight permiemter guard towers. The Japanese were brought to the camps under the pretext that they were going for their own protection, however came to find the guard towers and armed soilders enclosing them behind barbed wires. They had become prisioners, guilty for the crime of being Japanese. What followed for many was three years of an isolated exisitence, void of freedom, lost in confusion and dispair, what followed was three years of unjust imprisonment.

On April 25th, Japanese Americans, Muslims and many other people made an annual pilgirimage to commorate this blotch in American History and to ensure "never again". The experience of the Japanese Americans offers invaluable wisdom to Muslim Americans living in a post 9/11 America, that are faced, as the Japanese did, with a constant unjust scrutinty and harrasment by the Government and general public. Talking with former camp attendees, a constant phrase surfaced, "fighting injustice". These powerful two words, resonate on so many levels and they remind me of a commonly quoted saying of the prophet:

Whosoever sees an evil deed, let him change it with his hand; if he is unable to do so, then with his tounge; if he is unable to do so then with his heart, and that is the weakest of faith. (Muslim)

Having the opportunity to sit down and talk to former internees and learning their stories firsthand was remarkable in and byself. They discussed their own complancent nature at the time, and the post-camp experiences that finally led them to open up to younger generations. They talked about the humiliating expeirneces of encampent in retrospect and the degrading treatment. We also discussed the contemporary issues, Muslims find themselves in today, and idnetified parallel stories.

If we, as Muslims, as activists are to be the catalyst for social bettermant as mandated by the Qu'ran, it is critical that we learn and gain from the past expeirnces of others, and interanlize these struggles in our own, and to work in solidarity with other communities to find justice for the wrongs commited and being commited. In doing so we are taking a proactive approach and emboding the above mentioned hadith. Let us not be complacent with the injustices of today, let us ignore no more the parallel stories of the Japanese Americans and Muslim Americans and gain from what they can offer. Let us speak out against Abu Gharib, Guantanomo Bay, and the secret torture prisons around the world. Let us no longer see it acceptable to allow the FBI to infringe on our civil liberites in overt tactics.

Manzanar was an eye-opening experience that proves to be a reminder to continue to work against the injustices of our day, and find meaning in the past. There is so much to gain from going
.

Fort Minor- Kenji

Going to Manzanar this weekend. Veterans Day has been celebrated for ninety years now as a Federal holiday with banks, schools, and government offices taking the day off in remembrance. Last Friday, it was observed here in our own backyard, at UCLA with ceremonies including a thunderous F-16 flyover and patriotic performances. However is a single day filled with gallantry parades, ornate ceremonies and decorous soldiers enough appreciation and activism to honor a disenfranchised group of American Heroes.

The majority soldiers of today are recruited from within poor minority communities, with promises of valor, glory and financial stability, much like the heavy Chicano drafting done during the Vietnam War with promises of citizenship. Often time’s soldiers are deployed for well beyond their initial agreements or have consecutive tours of duties. No matter how you feel about the wars, across America hundreds upon hundreds of G.I.s are coming home from Iraq or Afghanistan and many of them are unable to acquire the medical treatment necessary for physical and physiological rehabilitation including the all too common post-traumatic stress disorder.

On this day of remembrance, let us not only honor our veterans with ceremonies and parades, but also lay the foundations of compassion and empathy In building of new and improving old specialized veteran clinics and hospitals, creating an organized infrastructure and ridding of the excessive bureaucracies. It is only then that we truly honor their sacrifices and let our actions speak louder than our words of a single day.

Talib al Habib - Light of Dawn

I wake with the light of the dawn whispering
With joy in my heart and with praise on my lips
In stillness and twilight I stand before you
Bowing, prostrating I call Allahu

My eyes see your beauty in the dawn's golden hues
My ears hear the thunder as it glorifies you
The rhythm of my heart beats the sound of your name
My breaths rise and fall with the tide of your praise

My soul knew and loved you before I was born
And without your mercy is lost and forlorn
Wherever I may wander down the pathways of life
My cry to you, oh my Lord, is 'guide me to light'

Through all fear and helplessness, to you do I turn
For your breath of healing and peace do I yearn
For all that I have, my Lord, all that I am
Is from You, is for You and to You will return

Obama's Acceptance Speech

It's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen, by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different, that their voices could be that difference.

It's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled. Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red states and blue states.

We are, and always will be, the United States of America.

It's the answer that led those who've been told for so long by so many to be cynical and fearful and doubtful about what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day.

It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this date in this election at this defining moment change has come to America.

A little bit earlier this evening, I received an extraordinarily gracious call from Sen. McCain.

I was never the likeliest candidate for this office. We didn't start with much money or many endorsements. Our campaign was not hatched in the halls of Washington. It began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms of Concord and the front porches of Charleston. It was built by working men and women who dug into what little savings they had to give $5 and $10 and $20 to the cause.

It grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of their generation's apathy who left their homes and their families for jobs that offered little pay and less sleep.

It drew strength from the not-so-young people who braved the bitter cold and scorching heat to knock on doors of perfect strangers, and from the millions of Americans who volunteered and organized and proved that more than two centuries later a government of the people, by the people, and for the people has not perished from the Earth.

This is your victory.

You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead. For even as we celebrate tonight, we know the challenges that tomorrow will bring are the greatest of our lifetime -- two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century.

Even as we stand here tonight, we know there are brave Americans waking up in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan to risk their lives for us.

There are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after the children fall asleep and wonder how they'll make the mortgage or pay their doctors' bills or save enough for their child's college education.

There's new energy to harness, new jobs to be created, new schools to build, and threats to meet, alliances to repair.

The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even in one term. But, America, I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there.

I promise you, we as a people will get there.

There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who won't agree with every decision or policy I make as president. And we know the government can't solve every problem.

But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will listen to you, especially when we disagree. And, above all, I will ask you to join in the work of remaking this nation, the only way it's been done in America for 221 years -- block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand.

What began 21 months ago in the depths of winter cannot end on this autumn night.

This victory alone is not the change we seek. It is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were.

It can't happen without you, without a new spirit of service, a new spirit of sacrifice.

So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility, where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves but each other.

Let us remember that, if this financial crisis taught us anything, it's that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers.

In this country, we rise or fall as one nation, as one people. Let's resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long.

Let's remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the banner of the Republican Party to the White House, a party founded on the values of self-reliance and individual liberty and national unity.

As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, we are not enemies but friends. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection.

To those -- to those who would tear the world down: We will defeat you. To those who seek peace and security: We support you. And to all those who have wondered if America's beacon still burns as bright: Tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity and unyielding hope.

That's the true genius of America: that America can change. Our union can be perfected. What we've already achieved gives us hope for what we can and must achieve tomorrow.

America, we have come so far. We have seen so much. But there is so much more to do. So tonight, let us ask ourselves -- if our children should live to see the next century; if my daughters should be so lucky to live as long as Ann Nixon Cooper, what change will they see? What progress will we have made?

This is our chance to answer that call. This is our moment.

This is our time, to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth, that, out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope. And where we are met with cynicism and doubts and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes, we can.
Thank you. God bless you. And may God bless the United States of America

Source: CNN

My Powell Alarm Rant

The other night I was sitting in Powell Library, studying (cramming) for my next early morning Organic Chemistry Lab. At a certain point at night the library turns into night Powell, where only a part of the library is left open for the studious/crammers. NOTE: You Must Be a Student with A Valid ID, or you risk being TASERED at night. Well the UCLA community officers come around at this point in time to check IDs and lock the doors. Well this "officer" decided to demonstrate the alarm door to the new recruits. So he decided to trip the door in a hall of studying students. The noise that followed was a consistent and abnoxious:

BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.

What made it all the worse is that I was at the table closest to the door. The community officeres walked off nonchalantly off to protect the world (library) from hobos crashing the nigth at the library. The alarm stoped only when a lady janitor came and used her key on the door, to the releif of many students.

I can't belive how some people have so little regard for other people, and yet how others have so much capacity to do good even in the face of such arogance.

My Rhodes Inspiration

I came across the Rhodes Scholarship today. It's an amazing scholarship that provides the 32 US recipients a chance to study any post-undergrad discipline they choose at Oxford, all expenses paid for. The scholarship judges applicants at four standards:

-literary and scholastic attainments
-energy to use one's talents to the full, as exemplified by fondness for and success in sports
-truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship
-moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one's fellow beings

With former Rhodes Scholars going on to become powerhouses in their respective fields the Rhodes Scholarship bar is set high. This is all to apparent looking at the 2008 batch. Among them Isra Bhatty, a Muslim Pakistani American is an all-star. Having completed her first year at Yale Law she will be going to Oxford for a year. She also knows six languages and has worked as an interpreter at Gitmo, to say the least of her achievements.

Although it is probably to late for me to be a Rhodes Scholar, it definitely encourages me to excel in academics and community service.

Moments in Venice

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px;
